Shape Vs Normal

Thursday, January 30, 2014

With this post I wanted to share with you my body shape and how clothes look on me if I was to wear it at my waist where a skirt should normally be worn. How my shape makes clothes look strange on me and how I give myself a different shape by wearing a skirt under my bust and using this as my waist for dresses.

Below is how I wear this outfit. Pulled up to my bust and tucked in to make my bust the main focus. Not that you could miss it but I like this shape. See how I style this outfit in my next blog post tomorrow!

Here I have untucked the top and a lot of people will wear it like this and it looks fine but I have become more of a box shape.

This is my actual waist and it is not straight so thing sit at a slant on my body. My bum raises the back which I do not like. My belly is is a Double Belly (DB) and goes in at my belly button. I have no problem showing my belly and having a Visible Belly Outline (VBO) in bodycon dresses but for this style of skirt I prefer it like the top picture.

Untucked and again people will wear an outfit like this and be happy with it but I just wanted to show how the same two items can look so different when you change your positions of wearing them.

See what a difference it makes to the shape of the outfit. This can work for any style skirt and top so give it a go with some of your items and take a few pics to compare and see what you like best. Leave a link in the comments if you blog about your own shape and how it changes.

  1. I don't like wearing any bottom piece at my hips, or what some would call my waist. I think my waist is the part on my body, higher than my belly button, where there is a slight indentation, or you could say, where I am the smallest. This holds up my bottoms, is more comfortable (because I don't have to spend my day pulling up my bottoms), and looks better, IMO. So, all in all, I'm with you.

    1. If i wear something at my belly button it usually cuts in and is uncomfortable so wearing it under my bust is more comfortable and i think looks better on me :)

    2. Me either. At the hips i get welts from clothes and the most unflattering muffin top x2. High waist ftw!

  2. Thank you for posting this. It really helps to get a sense of what works for different bodies. I wish more bloggers would do this. How are you tucking it, though? I can't quite make it out (bad eyes). I'm surprised to see that the front of the dress is longer than the back. I'm always saying I'd like to find a dress like this, as all the ones I have become shorter in the front due to the ol' belly.

    1. It is a skirt and a top of tge same print so i can move where it sits easily. The same thing would work with different print or plain non matching skirts and tops. Dresses can ride up at the front on me a bit because of boobs and belly. I will do another post like this using different non matching items so you can see it better :)

    1. It can be hard to really see how something looks when you are looking in a mirror. That is why I always take a photo as you see the whole outfit from a different perspective. Glad this has inspired you to try something new with skirts and tops :)

  4. I really really appreciate this post. It's super important in terms of fat visibility - how clothing can change the outward perception of our body shapes.

  5. I have this skirt (also a sale bargain, it's nice but not worth £45 IMO). For me too, it feels odd sat at the waist so I wear it with a vest top tucked in and a card I over the top. Plus, pulling up to under the bust makes it a better length.

  6. I also have a double belly that goes in at the belly button. I don't have an ample chest area so i emphasize my high waist with a belt. Skirts skim over my belly that way. Thanks for the post, ill aim to play with clothes more at see if i get a better result.

I just "found" you through another IG account (AmandaApparel). I love this!! It makes perfect sense. I've only just begun experimenting with wearing things at my "natural waist." I'm a "jeans and tees" kind of gal, and always wear them (and skirts) at my hips. I've always felt that emphasizing my natural waist or wearing anything with an Empire-like waistline made me look pregnant (and yeah, I've been asked). But, I got a couple belted dresses lately and love how they camouflage my DB. I'll give this trick a try next time I'm skirt shopping. Thanks!
